Companhia Energética do Ceará - COELCE is headquartered in Fortaleza, the capital of the State of Ceará (CE) and it is present in all the 184 State counties, which count on over eight million habitants, covering an area of 146,348 Km2.The provision for the distribution of electric energy was obtained by the period of 30 years, counting from 1998, when the company was privatised.
It is the third largest distributor in the Brazilian northeast region in terms of volume of energy sold, servicing over 2.7 million clients, of whom 2.04 million are residential.
To meet this demand, Coelce has 7,739 employees (effective, trainees and outsourced) and operates over 110 thousand kilometers of energy distribution and transmission lines. This infrastructure allowed the distribution, in 2007, of 7.3 gwh, volume 6.5% higher compared to 2006, and a gross sales result of R$2.43 billion.
The Company, which has its shares traded in Bovespa, is controlled by the Endesa Group, through Investluz S.A., which has 56.59% of the total capital and 91.66% of the voting capital of Coelce.The rest of the capital belongs to individuals and institutional investors domestic and foreign, such as the pension fund, and funds for investment clubs and other legal.
Companhia Nordeste de Eletrificação de Fortaleza (CONEFOR) arrives in Ceará, assuming the responsibility for the energy supply of the City of Fortaleza. The 60’s were also marked by the arrival of energy in Paulo Afonso (CHESF), Cariri, and the consequent deactivation by Companhia de Eletricidade do Cariri (CELCA) of the diesel generator groups.
The energy of Paulo Afonso Hydroelectric arrives in Fortaleza, so the thermoelectric generation groups were deactivated.
The new scenario for the energy market in Ceará culminates with the creation, pursuant to Law no. 9.477/71, of Companhia Energética do Ceará (COELCE), through the merger of CONEFOR, CELCA, Companhia de Eletrificação Centro Norte do Ceará (CENORTE) and Companhia de Eletrificação Rural do Nordeste (CERNE), having as main shareholders the local government authorities of the State of Ceará, Eletrobrás and the State Government. COELCE became the only energy concessionaire of the State of Ceará.
The corporate purpose of COELCE was extended to the level of Energy Company in Extraordinary General Meeting.
It became a Listed Company, with shares traded in the main stock markets of the Country.
On September 27, the Company concluded the corporate restructuring process through which Coelce merged its holding company Distriluz Energia Elétrica S.A., starting to be controlled by Investluz S.A., which holds 91.66% of the voting capital and 56.59% of the total capital of the Company.
On April 2, the concessionaire was privatized in public auction, performed by the Stock Exchange of Rio de Janeiro, and it started to be managed by Distriluz consortium, constituted by the companies Enersis, Chilectra, Endesa (Spain) and Cerj. On May 13, Concession Agreement was executed, granting to Coelce 30 years of exclusive rights in the distribution of electrical energy in the State of Ceará.
The company started a medium and long term strategic planning and image repositioning process, focused on the continuous expansion and improvement of services, including a closer client approach and the rollout of products and services as an answer to the market growth and needs.
Closure of the plan entitled Climbing Coelce (2004-2007), with 101% of progress in the goals proposed in search of approchement with customers and professional development of the domestic public and corporate partners. Launching the new platform for image "Our idea is to know you."
