Unlike other sewage companies in Brazil, COPASA holds formal water use permissions for most of its sources, including for all of its main water resources. COPASA also owns or holds use rights for almost all properties on which these water sources are located, which allows it to preserve the quality of most of its water sources, thereby preventing illegal occupation of the property and deforestation of the surrounding areas.
