In times of uncertainties, investors get pickier when analyzing and choosing an investment story and demand precise information not only about where the company is heading, but also how it will navigate through the thunderstorm. For times like these, it is important to have in mind the “key Cs” of good and compelling communication with investors: Content, Consistency and Credibility.

Quality content is obviously the cornerstone of any communication effort. IR is all about constantly turning the pieces of information about the company into a compelling investment case. When uncertainties hit the market, investors want to know the company’s ability to deal with the potential negative impact on its business, its positioning and its preparedness for an even worse scenario or for a spark of recovery.

More than just knowing all the macro drivers that impact the company’s business, and those that don’t, investors seek reassurance from the company’s management that it has been doing everything under its control to ensure the best possible performance in any of the scenarios that may unfold. The key message to convey here is that the ship and the crew are in their best shape to sail, no matter how wind conditions may change.

Annual benchmarking research done by IR Global Rankings shows that companies have, in fact, been improving the content posted on their websites over the past three years, often creating new sections or detailing information in a clearer way. In addition to the drastic change in the global economic milieu since 2008 and some regulatory enforcement on disclosure that followed the crisis, this quicker pace of improvement in content is attributed to the increased demand and questioning that Investor Relations has encountered due to these very changes. Thus, the consequence of the crisis was not only the change in the information provided, but also the way it is presented and the new layers added to it.

However, content alone may not be enough to retain investor interest during crises. Uncertainties make market participants more conservative, leading them away from riskier bets. And quite often, companies with a short track record of success fall under the riskier category since companies with long-term consistent results are easier to understand. No wonder the majority of IPOs in 2011 worldwide are “underwater”, that is, trading below their IPO price. It does not mean that there is something consistently wrong with those new listings, but for investors, betting in traditional and long- established companies may be a way of taking refuge from volatility.

If a company cannot yet benefit from a longer history of consistent results, it still can convey consistency through a convincing business model built upon a clear competitive advantage. The educational role of the Investor Relations area comes handy for these new companies - in these cases an additional effort is required to show how their business is built on solid ground. The traditional disclaimer of funds - “past performance is no guarantee of future performance” - works for companies too and so building a good investment case and demonstrating that the lack of a long track record does not mean lack of consistent returns in the future is another big challenge for Investor Relations, especially in uncertain times.

IR Global Rankings research shows that technology has increasingly played an important role in the educational aspect of Investor Relations, thus helping to convey the consistency of an investment case to create a more level playing field for companies, regardless of their size, years of listing, and industry. The only striking gap that still remains is among regions, but even this gap is being narrowed dramatically as technology, once again, has created quicker means to exchange information globally.

Last but not least, there is the issue of credibility. Never oversell and overpromise - that is the holy motto of Investor Relations. However, companies should not go to the opposite end of the spectrum either, underinforming and not providing any light on the company’s actions to overcome the uncertainties. In good times and bad times, credibility is achieved by how much a company is committed to providing quality information and consistently delivering results (related to the other two Cs mentioned above). Uncertain periods may come and go but credibility remains intact provided the company diligently and proactively seeks to keep its commitment to the three basic tenets of the capital markets: access to information, transparency and equal treatment. Navigating turbulent seas might cause a few cracks in the ship, but if the owners remain confident and are willing to support the crew, those cracks will be fixed and the ship will be able to resume the planned journey once the thunderstorm blows over.

Infosys named top Indian company for investor relations

NEW DELHI: Technology giant Infosys has been ranked as the country‘s best company for investor-relations practices such as corporate governance, financial disclosure and online dissemination of shareholder-related information.

In the first-ever such rankings for India, compiled by Investor Relations Global Rankings (IRGR), Infosys has been ranked on the top in all the four categories -- corporate governance practices, financial disclosure procedures, IR website and online annual report.

Infosys was followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank, Persistent Systems, Hindustan Unilever and Nucleus Software Exports in the category of best corporate governance practices.

Besides, IRGR has named Infosys, Wipro, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS and Firstsource Solutions as the best-ranked IR website companies.

Infosys is the only company named in the categories of best online annual report and best financial disclosure practices in India.

IRGR, a New York-based organisation which claims to have published such rankings across 35 countries since 1999, said that the Indian rankings were compiled jointly with its coordination group and supporting entities like KPMG, Arnold & Porter, MZ, and Sodali.

It said more than 80 Indian companies registered for the rankings and these also included Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Aditya Birla Nuvo, Edelweiss Capital, Oberoi Realty, Godrej Consumer Goods, Godrej Properties, ONGC, NTPC, ICICI Bank, Pipavav Defence and Offshore and PFC.
