Positivo Informática is active in the hardware segment and the educational technology segment. In the hardware segment, the Company serves the retail and corporate markets, as well as government market. In 2009, the hardware segment accounted for 97.6% of the Company´s net revenue and the educational technology segment for 2.4%.
Hardware segment
The Company manufactures desktops, notebooks and servers, developing specific products and solutions for each of its markets - retail, government and corporate, which accounted for 76.9%, 16.7% and 6.4%, respectively, of gross hardware revenue in 2009. In the same period, 52.6% of gross revenue from this segment came from desktops, 44.6% from notebooks and 0.8% from other items, including printers, set-top boxes and services.
In the retail market, Positivo Informática offered a line of standard computers, desktops and notebooks directed mainly at home users and also micro and small companies, with prices ranging from R$ 699 to R$ 3,999. Market knowledge and expertise allow the Company to develop highly functional products ready for specific uses such as watching television, studying, gaming, or making telephone calls. With modern designs, products include manuals with accessible and instructive language, which greatly facilitate the installation of computers. In the government market, desktops, notebooks, servers and connectivity solutions are developed strictly in accordance with the specifications in the bidding guidelines published by government agencies and public companies, to meet the needs of each institution.
In 2005, the Company started to do business in the corporate market, serving medium and large companies with desktops, notebooks, servers and connectivity services, as latest-generation products personalized to each customer´s needs. In a very short time, Positivo Informática succeeded in obtaining a base of important customers from among Brazil’s biggest companies. One particularly important market is the SMB segment (small and medium businesses), which is highly fragmented and dominated by the gray market. SMBs account for around 80% of the entire corporate segment, according to the IDC, and more than half of the PCs are supplied by the gray market. In 2008, Positivo Informática created a specific structure to deal with SMBs, with highly-qualified professionals fully prepared to develop partnerships with distributors, ensuring a rapid and large-scale entry into this market.
Educational technology segment
In the educational field, Positivo Informática is recognized for its pioneering development of top-quality solutions in three segments: Private Education, Public Education and Retail, which together accounted for 2.4% of total annual gross revenue in 2009. The Educational Technology division exemplifies the operational synergy between two of the Positivo Group’s major areas of expertise: education and technology.
The division created and manages the country’s biggest educational portals, with a joint average of 4 million page views per day, and possesses a portfolio of pioneering products, including learning tables, which create a collaborative environment comprising tangible and virtual elements in which to learn Portuguese, mathematics, English and Spanish, and which are exported to more than 30 countries.
Positivo Informática’s educational solutions are present in 11,790 public schools and 2,439 private schools. There are also more than 90 retail titles, including educational software, reference works and entertainment options for the whole family, available at 900 points of sale throughout Brazil. The highlights include the Aurélio Online Dictionary, Disney’s exclusive line of interactive educational products and Kid Pix, the best-selling educational software in the world.
Innovative Products:
- Educational desks: These are tools consisting of electronic modules, educational software and a range of learning materials. Educational desks include the following product lines: Alfabeto, My Kid, Multimundos, Kid Together and E-Blocks. The E-Blocks educational desk is an innovative tool for literacy in the English language, which the Company is marketing in the United States and China, as well as several countries in Europe, South America and the Middle East. The innovative nature and effectiveness of the E-Blocks product has been recognized internationally and has received awards from the UN and the American Association of Educational Publishers.
- Education portals: With more than 1.6 million paying users and more than 4 million page views a day, portals make the Internet an important tool for supporting learning and interaction among the school, parents, students, and teachers. They provide access to an extensive library of multimedia education content as well as facilitating online consultations with specialist teachers and participation in interdisciplinary projects involving students from different schools. They provide selected educational content appropriate to each user´s level of education and serve three different segments of users: students, parents and teachers. Positivo Informática´s educational portals are: (i) Portal Educacional, for private schools; (ii) Portal Universitário, University Portal, for universities; (iii) Portal Aprende Brasil, for state government education departments and public schools; and (iv) Portal Positivo, for schools that are part of the Sistema Positivo de Ensino.
- Educational software: These are software programs designed for educational purposes, including games, simulators, and reference works. In addition to marketing software programs Positivo Informática has written itself, it is also the distributor in Brazil for several world leaders in educational software. The Company´s exclusive distribution agreements for Quicktionary translating pens and electronic editions of the Aurélio dictionary emphasize the importance of its role in this respect. The Company is also distributor for Kid Pix Deluxe software, which is the world´s top selling creativity software. We also offer the following products: (i) simulators: software programs functioning as a virtual laboratory to support learning by creating realistic situations, and providing activities including analysis experimentation, manipulation of variables and formulation of hypotheses; (ii) multimedia authoring: software programs enabling users to create interdisciplinary projects, integrating several media (text, images, animations, audio and video); (iii) exploration and practice: software programs that combine theory and practice, developing activities to facilitate the use of concepts from several fields of knowledge to solve problems arising in everyday situations; and (iv) education and entertainment: software programs that develop learning activities through the use of games.

- Aggregated services: These services are comprised of programs for training educators and technical and pedagogic support currently totaling over 300,000 hours of response services.
