
In 1966, Proquigel Química Ltda. was founded in São Paulo, Brazil. We initially produced acrylic resins, and expanded to polystyrene. During the 1970s, we expanded our operations to the State of Bahia, Brazil with production of acrylics, SAN and ABS resins.
In 1981, Unigel Química S.A. was created and Policarbonatos do Brasil was founded in partnership with Idemitsu and Pronor. From 1984 to 1986, we acquired 18% of the Companhia Brasileira de Estireno S.A., or CBE, and acquired Resarbras. Between 1992 and 1994, we acquired half of Metacril S.A. and participated in the privatization of Petroquímica União S.A. - PQU. In 1995, we acquired Polo Films, a BOPP manufacturer in the State of Minas Gerais, from the British American Tobacco company. We also founded Latapack with BBM and Latapack Ball. In 1997, we acquired Acrinor and the remaining equity stake in CBE and Metacril. In 1999, we sold our ABS resin operations to Bayer.
In 2002, we started operations in a new ammonium sulfate plant in Candeias, in the State of Bahia. In 2005, we acquired Policarbonatos do Brasil S.A. IN 2006, we entered into the Mexican market through the acquisition of Plastigas de Mexico S.A. de C.V. In 2007, we acquired our MMA and sulfuric acid plants. In 2008, we acquired a styrene plant from Dow in Camaçari, Bahia. We began our production of acrylonitrile in Mexico in partnership with PEMEX in 2009, as well as production of MMA, sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate. Also in 2009 we acquired the polystyrene plant in São José dos Campos, São Paulo from BASF.
In 2010 we began operations in expansion projects, making us a well-known global producer of acrylics and fertilizers. In December 2010, we also leased a polystyrene plant at the Dow Chemical petrochemical complex, in Guarujá, State of São Paulo, Brazil. We commenced operations of this new polystyrene plant in 2011.
