Minerva opens first biodiesel production facility

Barretos, March 16th, 2011 - Minerva S.A. (BOVESPA: BEEF3; Bloomberg: BEEF3.BZ; Reuters: BEEF3.SA), one of the market leaders in Brazil in the production and sale of fresh beef, live cattle and byproducts, with operations also in the beef, pork and poultry processing segments, would like to inform its shareholders and the general market that it will open next Friday, March 18th, its first biodiesel production facility. The plant is located in the town of Palmeiras de Goiás, State of Goiás, near its slaughter and deboning unit.

The unit will initially produce 45m3/day of biodiesel and is able to reach up 100m3/day.

The raw material used for processing biodiesel will be the beef tallow, a by-product from Minerva slaughter plants in the State of Goiás (Palmeiras de Goiás and Goianésia). "The unit will convert tallow from our factories or thirdparties in valued product, and have the flexibility to use other raw materials, such as soybean oil. The result is a renewable source of energy, strengthening our commitment to sustainability and environmental issues as well as adding value to the Minerva‘s product." says Fernando Galletti de Queiroz, President of the Company.

Part of the production of biodiesel will fuel the Company‘s truck fleet and the remainder will be sold through auctions to ANP (National Petroleum Agency).

Other units of Biodiesel

Besides the unit in Palmeiras de Goiás, Minerva also plans to build biodiesel production plants in both units of José Bonifácio and Barretos, in the State of São Paulo. The Company‘s goal is to have a biodiesel plant in each of its slaughter units.
